Wilderness Air Zimbabwe was started in 1999, during which year it saw spectacular growth. In subsequent years, due to the precarious situation in Zimbabwe, it also witnessed an equally dramatic decline in its tourist volumes. However, through all of the political uncertainty we have remained committed to continuing with our Zimbabwe operation. The rationale is that at some point Zimbabwe's political situation will improve and tourist volumes will return to the levels previously enjoyed. Today almost all Wilderness Air's previous competitors have ceased to exist. Therefore, when the political climate does change, Wilderness Air Zimbabwe will be well positioned to benefit from a growth in business levels.

The base of operation is in Victoria Falls. Most of the operations take place in the area bounded by Harare, Ruckomechi in the lower Zambezi, Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park. Within these areas Wilderness Air primarily services lodges owned and operated by Wilderness Safaris Zimbabwe, namely Makalolo and Little Makalolo Camps, Davison’s and Linkwasha Camps and Ruckomechi Camp.

The operation focuses entirely on moving guests and a few staff members. Because of the low volumes Wilderness Air has mainly been using Cessna 206 aircraft. Due to the recent influx of business into Zimbabwe however, the operation now has a Cessna Caravan to service our clientele.

Many of the camps serviced in Zimbabwe are remote and access to speedy maintenance backup is not as good as in Namibia and Botswana. For this reason aircraft reliability is paramount. We therefore can reposition large aircraft from Botswana at times when traffic volumes justify having them in Zimbabwe
